  • Help - my vine is bleeding....

I have a vine growing over the pergola, it is ornamental as the small grapes simply drop off in early summer. Two days a go I saw a small branch hanging low and foolishly decided to snip it off. The next day there was a wet patch on the patio and we realised it was dripping from where I had cut it. It has now been dripping constantly for 2 days into a bowl. I tried bandaging it this morning then wrapping around with gaffer tape but when I came home this evening it was dripping again through the bandage. I realise now I should have left it alone and tucked the branch up out of sight but does anyone have any ideas how I can stop it dripping? Will it die? There are many new buds on it.
    Any help appreciated.

I wouldn't worry about it at all, our vines drip all the time, here they're all pruned long before now and as soon as the sap starts to rise, they 'bleed'. Our vine is about 25 years old, very gnarled, gets hacked right back each winter, leaks everywhere and still generates about 60 kilos of grapes every year.

I'm actually more interested in why your vine sheds all the small grapes, do they mature first and then fall or do they drop before they mature?

It will probably survive. Have a look at the bandage on this page :- grapes

Thanks all, I feel more confident now that it will be ok. In reply to TonyF - the 'grapes' are very tiny and drop before they even think about growing, in fact they are very annoying and land in your food when you are trying to dine al fresco on a balmy summer's evening (yes even in Stoke-on-Trent) So after 15 years of this we have cunningly decided to rig up a fine net under the pergola this year to catch the bits as they fall.....! Maybe we should have had a fruit bearing vine to start with.....
