  • Help! Broken Pear tree!

Help! Work an dropped a ladder on my new dwarf pear tree and has a snapped off a main branch. Can it be fixed? Splint? Graft and tape? Or just cut back and let it regrow? Any help gratefully received. Will try to attach pics.

What a bummer! Is the break above the graft? If so it will regrow. If it is below the graft (which I doubt as it looks quite high up ) you'd end up just growing the rootstock not the variety you have chosen. Personally I would cut it back just below the break but other people might have more knowledgeable advice.

Made a neat cut, angled a bit to allow water to drain, at just below the break and leave it.
The tree will pick another branch to be the dominent one on that side and whichever will develop a little more then the others, in a couple of years check that it is growing as you want the shape to be.

Someone's sister, was it NVG, had the same problem she was going to attempt to fix it. Maybe they will let us know how they got on. (Apologies if it wasn't you NVG...the old age setting in does my memory no good at all).

I had an orange that was "hanging by a thread" and used gaffa tape it worked and the orange is nearly ready to harvest. Ok, an orange stem is a lot thinner than your pear tree branch but you could try it. If the top above the tape dies off you can then cut to a bud below the tape and cross your fingers. Just tape it really really well.
          Just think happy thoughts
