  • Bulking Out Compost?

I will be shortly planting two Dwarf Apple trees in containers. I am using John Innes No3 but I not sure that I will have enough to fill both containers. I do have some John Innes Seed compost. Can I mix this with the No3 to bulk the main compost out?

    Best regards,
    Greg

Yes although typically seed compost is lower in nutrients because the seeds contain all they need to sprout. Not a problem otherwise, stick in some grass cuttings too and it will help.

Be a little careful of the JI3, last time I used any it was not really that good and tended to set like rock around the plant. Lime tree I think.

It looked more like sandy rubble then compost or growing medium was not impressed at all with it. Actually never bought anything again that even said "With added JI3" on the bag.

Eventually I tipped the whole lot out and made up a better mix that was very little of the JI3. Tree has recovered from it's shock of being put in the stuff.

I'm not a fan of JI in pots either, great to top up my raised beds, but I would put some manure in the bottom myself.
