  • Blackcurrant when to pick

    Hi
I have Ben Conan blackcurrant. Being its first year the bush only has 18 fruits on it. I have tasted two which looked black. They were green inside. Pardon my ignorance but are they supposed to be green inside, if not any idea what clues I should look for to know when I should harvest.

I think they are going to be lovely cos even though the berries were green inside they were quite nice. I believe the Bens ripen at once on each strig so you cut a whole strig off.

    Thankyou
    Sheila

If they're black ... pick them. They won't get any blacker than that

When the blackbirds start eating is the time you should have picked them ...

I thought you were supposed to leave them for 7 days after they went black before picking them? Not sure where I got this from!

To be honest I am not sure, this is the first year we have them in our garden and they haven't gone black yet... hopefully someone who knows more than us will give the answer.

I looked at some I had in the freezer(shop bought ) and they are not green in the middle.

I was planning on leaving mine after they turned as I said for 7 days, maybe that gives them time to get a bit more sweet and juicy and not be green in the middle?

Just talked to my other half and as usual I have it wrong

Our first lot of blackcurrants were eaten by the birds and it is the blueberries that we will be leaving for 7 days after they first turn blue He now has all thr fruit covered in netting since he lost the blackcurrants I guess I will have to wait until next year to use the knowledge I am picking up about blackcurrants

sorry sclarke624 I hope I haven't added to your confusion!
