  • Blackberry

    Hi,

I just bought 4 Raspberry canes and a Blackberry plant. Well that's the question actually, is the Blackberry a plant or not? It has several shoots and I've now confused myself by wondering whether hey are canes or just one plant! Can someone help me?

I would imagine it was just one plant - going by the evil suckers growing in my veg plot. You (well I do) get loads of shoots from one root, which then take over the world.

Arrrrrgh! Taking over the world?! Fortunately I'm going to be growing it in a pot, hopefully that will stop it! I'll just re-pot the plant then, not divide up, I really don't want to kill it!

        Thanks for the advice!

I can't remember the name of mine at the moment, it's thornless with divided leaves, but I treat it like a raspberry. Last year I just had one fruiting cane, but it stretched about 12 foot, trained along the fence. Once I'd picked all the blackberries I cut out the old cane. This year it's got two, again very long, but it doesn't seem to be taking over the world with loads of shoots
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!
