Default Ants on apples!

Help! I checked last night and my baby apple tree - only 3 ft tall - is covered with ants and the leaves are getting disfigured Can anyone suggest the best way to deal with them please?

The first question is the ants doing the damage or has you tree got something wrong with it already , as i've got ants on my broad beans at the moment and the only 2 without have aphid on them so i take it the ants are after the aphids for food.
