Default allotments in swansea

I am so envious of folks who have just had their allotment...I have had my name down on 3 different lists in Swansea for nearly 2 years now and my name hasnt moved at all, even though I phone the various plot secretaries to politely ask how's it going....its very slow progress, well there is none-and its very frustrating ! My husband wont let me dig up some of the lawn, so I revert to growing in pots.I have thought, as suggested by other grapevine members, to advertise and ask if any elderly folk would be willing to 'lend' me apiece of their neglected garden...in return for veg and of course some gardening being done.. Has anyone done this? and does it really work ?

I am in Neath and there aren't many here and they all have waiting lists - though I have not been patiently waiting for a couple of years like you.

I am considering the route you are thinking, been offered by my inlaws in return for keeping the lawns down and a bit of the crop.

I would still prefer my own allotment though

And my wife won't let me dig up anymore of our lawn either!

Ah! another like- minded would -be- allotmenteer. I have even searched out all the allotments in Swansea on Google Earth, and some appear, from the air, to have loads of unused, un-tended plots, but maybe they are unusable pices of land ie. boggy, full of brambles or knotweed etc. As you know, it is so frustrating, playing the waiting game, but I am not alone...last year there were 7 people on the list, on one site I have my name down on, this year it has risen to 30 !
But all good things come to those who wait- and wait, and wait I just have to be patient and keep growing in pots on the patio.
Best of luck to you and fingers crossed we both get a lottie soon

Hmm, I might look on google earth too.

Well, I sincerely hope that you get one soon! I will have to make do this year, though I managed to slip to 6x2 mini greenhouses in the garden without too much grief from the boss!

Remember that Google earth is not a live shot, many of the images on there are from several years ago, so what you see may not be what is actually there today.

Hi Mr D

I am now live in cornwall but was from Neath, but would like to come back to wales, But I do not want to be without an allotment. Where in neath do you live, last summer I asked about an allotment up in Fairyland and was told there was a waiting list of about 7 and if I went to live with my mother we would be on the wrong side of the river, Ie Penywern. I went up to fairyland for a walk and there is land there to clear about another 3 plots ,you could always ask if this is possible.

Now I am thinking of trying to come back and maye get a house in the Rhondda vale I could buy a nice for about 90K and be without a mortgage and my husband and I get part time jobs and maybe get an allotment there.

Hmm

I live up the dulais valley, but I thought the council were not telling me the full story as they gave me a very short list of allotment sites:

Moor Road Baglan
Crawford Road Baglan
Margam
Cwmavon
Glyncorrwg

Then I did a little more digging (excuse the pun) and found out that there are 2 sites in Tonna and 1 in Resolven and a large site in Bryncoch.

I have gotten on the lists for tonna and resolven.

Apparently there is one at Glynneath, but I do not have the contact details.

The ones in Neath town area (fairyland) are not covered by the borough council so I might not stand a chance there, but I have got the contact details so I will give them a call! Thanks!

Turns out it is not Bryncoch, it is Blaenhonddan which is Cilfrew/Aberdulais way.

Only 5 plots there and a waiting list too
