don't
if you're going to try - cover the plant in at least a cloche, and better - rig up a frame of glass (or put a proper coldframe over it). They do need protection, if only to get the sun's heat hot enough to ripen the melons...
if we have a summer like last year's, there's not a hope, I'm afraid...God made rainy days so gardeners could get the housework done.
