| Commercially they are kept chilled and sometimes sprayed with chemicals to prevent early sprouting or rotting. This is why the label with seed potatoes often advises careful handwashing afterwards. However, it's possible to take a few of the last earlies you lift and plant them in a pot in August and keep them sheltered to have a few early spuds in December.

| Seed potatoes are grown as a crop just for planting and they are (or should be ) certified by the man from the ministry. The problem with saving your own is that you won't know if they are pest and disease free and as mine only cost me about £6 I think it was it's hardly worth the effort
