I have a new allotment with a big rusty steel drum on it, used as a water collector. Does anyone have a view on the health implications (for plants and people) of using 'rusty' water?

I don't think there are any concerns. Rust is insoluble so it is not readily taken up (metabolised) by plants or animals. -
Not my favourite water butt, I too have a rusty drum but mine is used for burning non compostable items. A few holes and it works a treat and keeps the mess down.I'm only here cos I got on the wrong bus.Comment

I don't think the rust would cause too much problem per se, but it sounds like ir won't be long before it has holes in it if it's rusting so much? I have a dolly tub with a rusty/leaky bottom & I've lined it with a piece of pond-liner. Worked well & it holds water now
You might be able to do it with a wheely-bin liner if the drum's not too big? Best to do it now, while there's still a lot of rain - if it leaks mid-summer you might end up with a problem

I would not recommend drinking out of it or letting you dog or chickens,
