Default New Allotment Owner

Hi as usuall I am new to all of this, only ever grown a few herbs and tomatoes in the garden. Have read numerous info on beginnig an allotment so all seems not to daunting. Would appreciate any advice on what to do now. Is there any thing I can start to grow now not worried if not to much as a gentle start would be nice.
Many Thanks

Welcome to the vine. Im just over the border from you in Northants.
I am hoping to plant sweetcorn, runner beans, corgettes, perepual spinach and beetroot, stuff i have grown from seed and is maybe a little late going in - due to work pressures, but it will catch up. Salad is something you could try too.
What state is it in? have you got any ground ready? Are you doing beds or the whole area? Lots to think about but.............most of all enjoy your plot.

Welcome to the vine waynebedda!

Still plenty of time for peas and beans, turnips, winter greens can be sown now, swede, leek plants, carrots, summer brassica plants, phew.... the list iis endless!
Bit late for tatties but you could plant some a bit later for Christmas.Late for onions but autumn sown japanese sets can be planted later on.

Must be loads more as well, but the best thing to do is have a look around the allotments and be guided by whatever others are doing!

Hello Wayne

I've just sown winter cabbage in the greenhouse, aim to plant out end June. If you get an area clear and ready to plant by then, winter crops like cabbage and kale might help give you a feeling of achievement when little else is growing!

Good luck.

Like Waynebeddall I'm a newbie so new that I haven't got my plot yet (next month or so I'm told) but thanks to all the advice and comments I've seen on this site I can't wait. I've decided to use raised beds and already have umpteen designs in my head - it's a man thing - but iI was wondering if I use raised beds do I need to dig/rotavate the area that the bed will sit on or can I just lay the bed out and fill it and await the magnificant results that will surely arise.

Hey Wayne, no wait, that's me......

I got my allotment on February of this year (I too am an inhabitant of the Peoples Republic of Bedfordshiredom), you'll find all you need on here.

One piece of advice I would say, if you're getting the plot rotavated - learn what bindweed looks like. Don't do like me and think it was potato roots and just ignore them...

I'm now a fully fledged, card carrying member of the bindweed eridication society. Evil stuff!

Keep an eye on this place and you'll not go far wrong. I've never grown anything before (not worthy of note anyway), but I've already tucked into my first ever spuds.

Great isn't it!

Welcome.

They are still selling tomato plants in Garden centers, and if you buy plants you can still put in CORN...yummmm...Squash, Strewberrys, go to £streacher and put in blackcurrentm, tayberry, Jeruslem Artichoke (carefull you will never get rid of them. Runner beans.

From Seed you can do Beet root, Pea, Coliflower, Cabbage, Broc, Brusssles.

Then start stuff for next year. Globe artichoke take ages to grow as do asparagus.

Also start making your compost bins for the leaves.

also I have to wait between 4-6 weeks to get my plot rotavated I am a bit eager so I would like to do it my self but the weeds grass is about 2ft high. Should I wait or start it my self. If so I cant get any power to my site so not sure what to do unless i have to hire.

Don't forget quick growing crops for a feeling of getting somewhere quickly. Try radish and lettuce which will be ready six weeks from planting. I wish I had done that because they'd be cropping by now whereas everything else is still weeks away. Needless to say I planted these catch crops earlier this week!
