hi, does anyone know where i can get a lunar planting calender for this year? last year i had one and tried it with a few things with nice results especially my courgettes, i planted them some intune with lunar cycle and some not intune and they were worlds apart the one intune were bigger, healthier and and produced lots more fruit. so could any one help me here?

Think if you go to the homepage they also sell them for about £9. Last year's will not be any use as the solar calendar and the lunar calendar are not synchronized

Hi Wayne and Bluemoon, I'm interested in the idea of lunar planting too and may have a bit of an experiment this year. I've had a look at the site and it seems good, though I'm a bit unsure about the term 'good time to plant', should I assume this means small plants into the ground rather than sowing seeds?

I think its all activity be it sowing seeds, transplanting, pruning or harvesting.

The link is very good offering a basic indication of what is good and what to avoid. I have a book by Nick Kollerton which covers the 2008 calendar and has 50 odd pages expalining the cycles and impact the moon has on other aspects of nature. Its worth a read if you are interested.

I have the same book by Nick K...don't always follow it as if it is warmish on a leaf day and the garlic needs doing - it gets done! But I do try to follow it most of the time. It's good to record when you did do stuff when you look back at what was successful or not though.

I was always sceptical about lunar planting, until we moved across to France. We have an old woman on the outskirts of the village with a fantastic potager, always full of stuff no matter what time of year. I spoke to her about a year ago and she swears by lunar planting, has done it all her life. (She's 75 if she's a day). Clearly not a new phenomenon and our farmer neighbours behind dont sow exactly to the time stated but certainly to the day for their corn and barley. Now converted. (However I just cant resist putting stuff in pots or in the deck anyway whenever its warm)

even better does anyone know how i can learn how lunar planting works so i dont have to pay for one of those calendars every year? plus i think its better to fully understand something without having to go to the trouble of ordering calenders online cheers wayne

I don't know where you can learn about it sorry, but i got my calendar from lunar-organics.com. Last year i used the book by nick kollerstrom and found it easier than the wall chart.

Thanks for the link, it's very interesting. Shame though, I sowed lots of seeds yesterday and it was in the last quarter, when no sowing is recommended.

I'll make a note and see how they do.

I wonder if the moon affects plants because they contain water, what affect does it have on us? Do we flow with a new moon and decline with the last quarter?

Tracey, I don't know what calendar you are using, but we are still in the third quarter - the full moon was on Good Friday. I transplanted my Tumbling Tom seedlings into hanging baskets the other day because I was fed up with the 'orrible weather, and only later remembered we were in the "root" phase - d'oh! Tomorrow is the last day for sowing roots, though - final quarter starts early on Sunday morning...

Phases of the Moon (conveniently, the US Navy use Universal Time, aka GMT, in their astronomical calendars)

I did a lot of Googling a while back to see if I could find anything about humans and the moon's cycle, but most of the studies found no statistically significant links. However one did find that women are more prone to depression around the new moon - most other studies didn't analyse their results by gender, so perhaps in those cases, men being depressed at other times of the month cancelled out the women, hence no apparent effect.

I treated myself this year to 'In Tune With the Moon', which is great because it covers gardening, winemaking, pruning, when to weed/not weed, chopping wood and even when is the right day to get your hair cut....no gawffawwss....it does work !!
