  • Lettuce and pigeons

I have sown some lettuce seed straight into a bed on my plot. Will I need to protect them from birds with netting? I accidentally left the netting off my cabbages a few months back and the pigeons had a feast!

    I would!

We went down to our plot the other day and saw that the cauli plants our neighbour has put in have all been eaten by pigeons! He is not going to be a happy bunny...

The slugs & snails mainly get my lettuce. The pigeons only go for my Brassicas. I have never netted my lettuce and they have survived.
You know you're a hard nosed gardener when you pull the weeds from others plots!

I would definately net any brassicas. The pigeons had a feast and stripped 9 cabbages to mere stalks in 3 days I think I will risk leaving the lettuce as they are and hope the slugs/snails leave them alone.

I'm ashamed to admit that I took positive enjoyment in despatching a certain snail this morning. Went into the garden to water my plants in my mini greenhouses only to find a rather large snail had munched his way straight throught the stem of one of my cosmos flowers.
