hemp and seaweed in compost????

hello buttercup, lucky you!
don't know about the hemp question - if anything is organic and will rot here, it goes on the plot!
seaweed is wonderful stuff IMO, just put it onto the soil as mulch.

I don't wash it - just lay it on top of your asparagus bed (or wherever you could do with a soil conditioner and light feed) as soon as you can get hold of it - Spring and Autumn - 8 inches isn't too much, it will disappear before you know it

Asparagus are seaside plants and have a particular affinity for seaweed.

i didnt know you didnt need to wash it! cool that makes it easy!
its also good to know that you dont need to rot it or dig it in!
such a shame im in the big smoke now i would have a constant supply of manure, seaweed plastic from farmers ect,
i slowly finding my sources here though but not as fun as goin down the beach!

If you were going to use a constant supply of fresh seaweed then I would wash it. Just to rinse some of the salt off.

hi buttercup,
the use of seaweed is quite universal in the garden as a mulch , fertilizer or in the compostbin as an activator.

the first two deal with seaweed and the last with composting , seaweed in the soil is not the same as compost or manure it does a totally different job.

Wooaahh like hemp man!

Do not worry about it, it is just plant stems and leaves, which is all straw is, just different plants.

The hemp in it will have been used in bedding material for livestock.
It does not have halucinatory properties that are of any use to a dope-head, though you could have some fun suggesting it does and watch the local yobs trying to smoke some real ****.

The jolly lady who supplies my horse manure offers two varieties, straw or chopped hemp, guess which shovels and digs easier?

Hemp does.

I use hemp for bedding down my horse, and on the pack it says something like "rots down to a valuable compost", can't remember the exact words... I used quite a lot this when sheet composting a raised bed, and it does seem to work pretty well IMO.

As hemp is very absorbent, I did wonder if putting plain hemp from the pack (sans horse droppings!) around plants would work as a slug deterrent, (like those organic pellets you can get which the slugs don't like crossing because of their dehydrating effect). Will experiment this summer and let you know if it works!

that sounds really good, most of it has rotted down now but the stable where i got it still has some left, should be very handy!
