Community Equipment

Our Guild is considering buying some items of garden machinery (tiller, rotavator, chipper, brash cutter etc) for hire to its members.

I would be grateful if you could let me know if you have done similar and what you consider to be the most useful (popular?) purchases.

You need to look into the H&S issues and training on this as well as insurance. If you hire out your chipper and some one shredds their child you could be liable.

I'm not sure what equipment we have but i do know that the strimmer is the most borrowed followed by the rotavator. Everyone who wants to borrow one is shown how to use it and given all the safty equipment. People who are not confident can get a commitee member to do it for them.

our society does the same and as a society member you are covered by the insurance. rotavator most used followed by strimmer and hedgecutter

I would imagine the H&S and training issue would be similar to when hiring equipment from a high street hirer? when i've hired a rotovator/strimmer/hedgecutter before they have always showed me how to operate it (start/stop/emergency cut-off), and they usually provide a 'safety pack' of gloves/goggles/face shield at additional cost if you don't have your own.

A hire contract could be used between the guild and the allotmentee, similar to that used by shops.

p.s. the shredded child had me in stitches (i wonder if.... ) only joking!
