  • Owl :close encounter!

Just want to share this as one of those amazing moments- yesterday evening,I stepped out of the backdoor to close up the chickens at dusk, and an owl swooped down immediately above my head ,about 1 m away and flew on. Obviously as surprised as I was.It had a pale underbelly but seemed quite big. I have seen a barn owl last year at the bottom of our garden ,adjacent to a nearby farm, but this seemed bigger.
    Lovely sight.

        Cool!
It was possibly another barn owl (female owls are generally bigger than males)
Did it make a noise at all? Was the underside speckled or plain?
I'm sorry, worked in a falconry centre for a bit so dead keen on birds of prey!

We are very close to woods and often hear owls during the night and early morning, but don't see them very often... But we do see loads of bats at dusk.

Skychild,I like birds of prey too, find them amazingly well designed. It was plain cream.Owls do look a funny squashed shape when they fly as you are used to seeing them sitting at events on perches with their flat faces!

Unfortunately I had and even closer encounter with an Owl this week - still fishing feathers out of the radiator grille
