  • New hedgehog and insect home close to completion...

I thought on pe or two people might like a look at a new hedgehog and insect home that I've cobbled together today.

I've been collected branches and short little bits of wood for several weeks, and as I had a day off today I sawed up a small pallet, and then sawed all the branches and simply piled them on the top in the neatest at I could in the hope that creature or other might decide to move in there.

I happily admit that I'm a a total novice at this, and I'll almost have to go back to it and add a bit of waterproofing around the place to prevent the hedgehogs (which are intended to move in into the space under the pallet) from getting wet as any water seeps in through the logs, but I don't think it's al that bad for a very first attempt, and I've at least learned a few things for when I make the next when I've collected enough materials for another.

The underneath of the pallet, by the way, is to be filled with a couple of bags of hay lookinyg material which I bought from a local store and which was probably intended for rabbits going by the fact that it a photo of them on the bag. I just thought might be equally welcome as bedding for Hedgehogs, but I'm prepared to be corrected on this if it's not actually the case.

Nice effort. I have made an insect house and a bird house. I keep the sunflowers out to feed the birds too, but we have a rabbit proof secure fence around the plots so hedgehogs are not seen. However there is woodland and paths alongside so a decent environment exists for them there. Back at home my youngest son came back in the house quite shaken a week or so back "I've just kicked a hedghog!" In the dark he had stepped out onto the drive not expecting anything underfoot, luckily the little fella scamperred off into the night (and so did the hedghog).
