  • I Have Newts :)

i found this little guy yesterday, hiding underground in the buried brick and concrete rubble as well as loads of frogs or toads!

looks like a common newt, but they arent so common thesedays but hopefully they stay if i give them them a suitable place to live

My friend never can keep frogspawn in her pond cos the newts eat the tadpoles ......but even so they are great at eating slugs

O how wonderful! I love newts. A few years ago I had a pond with newts in it and when I moved house I found out the new people had filled the pond in. I was so upset wondering what had happened to the newts.
Hope they stay with you for a long time, they're fascinating to watch.

How fantastic! I've hardly ever seen a newt in real life...no more than a couple of times.

They are great to see and something i would never have thought i would find in my garden, its been over 20 years since i last saw one.

i have an old belfast sink full of green slimy goo and spawn of something in there which is the wildlife pond for the moment and has been for many years, surrounded by some concrete rubble and some overgrowth its a great little habitat for the moment while i sort something for them.

a propper wildlife pond is in planning

Newts are really cute. You are so fortunate to have such a heavily populated garden, what with the frogs/toads as well. They must really like the green goop in your belfast sink.

They are very cute creatures , so far i have only found the one newt but havent disturbed the area anymore since so i dont harm them or drive them away.
But the frog and or toad population is mental, theres so many of all sizes and colour variations which is cool but they always take me by surprise and i end up jumping when one jumps out at me.

The green goop looks and smells disgusting but is so full of life for such a small volume of water. i will probably be sick when i have to move the goop to the new pond but it has to be done.

heres another pic of the newt trying to hide and not doing a very good job..

Newts are pretty stupid! But they're adorable They co-exist happily with toads here (and I'm sure they'd be the same with frogs). It's only fish they can't share a pond with. I am sure you'll get more newts once you get your pond in. They are fun to watch!

Maybe you should leave your existing habitat and make the pond separate, if you can? Obviously they already like it there! But I'm sure they will like the new pond too

Of course they do ~ they eat the tadpoles
