  • By hook or by crook .....

I moved my bird feeder from the apple tree as I couldn't see it from my kitchen window, to a 6 ft shepherd's hook in the middle of my back lawn about 3 weeks ago . It used to be emptied in as little as 2 days by lots of tiny birds, but not one has visited it. What can I do?

I'm not a bird expert but from observation of our feeders and others they seem to prefer to sit in cover e.g. hedges, fences and dart out for food and back again and so on. Maybe it's too exposed for them? Just an idea?

Put it back. They can take weeks to try a new feederand you may well get a differebt type of bird coming to that one - and as HH has said they do like a little protection. So have two on the go, at least the ones that you have been feeding won't go hungry while you wait for your new feeder to be used.

Bet the sparrowhawk keeps checking it out though!

We have 7 feeders plus a bird table with different contents.
The best one is right outside our kitchen window.Even there they land on the nearby plants before taking their final flutter onto it...

I would agree, I think they do prefer a bit of cover.
