  • Egret

This morning I saw an Egret rise from a waterhole adjoining my garden which the forestry people have as a reservoir in case of fire. I have never seen one in my area before, is this now normal or another indication of climate change ( you would never think that here today, very windy and cold). Has anyone had other exotic wildlife sightings?

    Gosh...how lovely...I've never seen one!

I did a bit of a gooooogle and came up with two types, the little and great. Could you tell which one it was?

Here are a couple of links showing locations of both for your interest...

It was a little egret, I was speaking to the local wildlife ranger minutes ago who informs be that a local private lake had some a couple of years ago but they died during the harsh winter of 2011. Seems they might be making a comeback and not as rare as I thought but I am delighted to add a new visitor to my garden , hopefully I'll be able to get a photo soon, he also said that there were unconfirmed sightings of cattle egrets further south in Ireland.

Huge colonies along the Thames estuary and Adur river in Sussex have turned them into an almost indiginous species.

I had one land at work by the pond a few years ago but the resident crows soon saw it off.

They've been around in this country for a fair few years...just like the parakeets in London. Take a trip to kew or Wisley and all you see are Ringneck parakeets

Yes, windy is what we'll get more of from climate change. The Stun would have us believe we're going to get a Mediterranean climate, but we won't: windy & stormy, with flooding in winter and droughts in summer
