I have raked the soil and planted the seeds

Welcome to the wonderful world of Mama Nature and her destroyers - slugs, caterpillars, earwigs, woodlice, mice, pigeons, crows, wagtails, blackbirds, rabbits, pheasants, partridge etc etc - I have them all !
Slugs - eat pretty much everything
      caterpillars - definitely favour brassicas
earwigs - making lace of my aubergines
woodlice - just a general pain
mice - peas and beans are favourites - or any freshly sown seed
pigeons - pea shoots and brassicas a speciality
crows - brassicas seem to be well liked
      wagtails - strawberries
      blackbirds - ditto
rabbits - you name it they will either eat it or dig it up to try it
pheasants - mine like cauliflower curds and sprouts
      partridges - brassicas again

We don't have the last 3 of SW's list - but we have all the rest plus ducks and foxes both of which like a good dig just where those carrot seeds were sown. Probably why I grow everything except the above in modules.

I threw my toys out of the pram last night and put the blue pellets out after all my peas and beans had been chomped to the ground by snails.

I picked up 17 around my canes this morning - some were even still attached to the pea stalks. My hatred for snails is verging on irrational.

Get yourself some chooks. They will eat all the slugs and bugs in you garden. The downside is they'll also eat your plants!

My life has changed for the better since the organic ones came out. No chomping and no dead slugs exploded around the garden [we only used these for a short time before I found out how bad they were for any wildlife eating the dead slugs]....

I really don't like using them as I know how bad they are for the wildlife, I should have put in my previous post that I've trailed netting over the pellets so the birds and beasties can't get to the snails before I pick them up in the morning.

I wasn't getting at you - but the organic ones are really the tops.

I didn't net my psb last year and had to rid them of eggs /caterpillars twice a day all summer. But we did get an amazing crop of it all spring so it was worth it.
