  • Potatoes in Store

    Hi

I have started using my Desiree maincrop potatoes and found that quite a few are discoloured with dark brown streaks running through them and the flesh around the streaks tinged with pale brown. The tubers are still firm and it is mainly the smaller ones that are affected. They are stored in a brick outhouse in shallow cardboard boxes covered over with potato sacks.

They were grown on a piece of land that was limed for brassicas two years ago and for the first six weeks after planting we had no rain. Despite this I got a fair crop with a lot of very large ones. There has been no signs of blight in our area, although I had it two years ago and my crop of first early Swifts that were grown next to them also cropped well with no signs of disease.

The only odd thing has been the skin on the Desiree which has had a dry scaly appearance and the tubers have been very knobbly. I've grown Desiree for four years now but not on this bit of land and never noticed this before.

    Any ideas?

that sounds like common scab - it's worse on limey soils
