  • Leave or Clear

    Hi

I am busy harvesting and have a large area where I have pulled all my onions up. I am not planning to plant anything in this spot until next spring but it was now becoming overgrown with weeds.

It looks unsightly but it seems a but fruitless to keep clearing it knowing that it will not be used for some time. I am trying to clear the perennials but what do you suggest. Clear or leave? Perhaps weed membrane...

    Many thanks as always

I'd plant a green manure if you have no real crops to plant out. Now is a good time for some oriental greens which grow quickly.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Sow a green manure, such as phacelia?
Or perhaps cover with cardbaord which will slowly break down over the winter.
I think it is best to leave it covered with something (even weeds) rather than bare soil over the winter. The worst that will happen is the weeds will just come back again, but your soil may also erode in the rain if left.
