  • I give up!

Despite the netting! Get to plot to find 2 cabbage white butterflies, having a lovely time around my broccoli! I think they lift the netting off ! Admittedly I am not very good at the 'netting lark' , wish someone would invent something easier to use! Is it just me?

    try this........
dont grow any,...........but walk round the plots admiring everyone elses, admitting how bad u are at growing them, but how you so love them.
am sure you'll have a steady supply.

    only joking.
same myself this year (my first), but have learned now.....be better next year.

they can easily get though that cheap plastic finer netting, they fold their wings and slip in,then they find it hard to get out,

Part of my routine each morning is rubbing the eggs off the leaves. But it's easy for me as the veg garden is right outside.

        They are bad this year.

I have often wondered if its worth growing some sacrificial plants away from the nets.

I do grow white turnips in my cabbage beds as the smell confuses some of the cabbage whites. Problem is that this year all the turnips grew too fast and are stifling the cabbages.

Now come on gall, that is giving up and this is a growing place ,maybe they not going to amount to much, but unless you try you will never know, use those few as practice for next time, why not try a garlic clove and chilli tea, spray it on some and not others,it will give you not only pleasure in trying, but you will see for yourself how these things work, and maybe a nice supprise,,you can do it,

No I haven't really given up, I re-netted most of them, but left a couple that had already been nibbled, not so well netted. I have also planted more seeds, that have sprouted already. Incidentally they are growing almost next to onions and shallots, is that a good place?

Nasturtiums are a good sacrificial plant: it will attract blackfly & cabbage whites. When they're really infested just pull them up, pests an' all, and bury in the compost heap

You still need to check the brassicas regularly though, because something will always get through. As with snails, you need a multi-pronged approach, not just one method

Because of my lack of planning, it is not convenient to net all my sprouts as they are in awkward spots. So, I have been doing the 'hard yards' checking the leaves every other day and I can't believe how many eggs I have destroyed. I am getting quite good at it now!!!!
