  • Has anyone ever used citronella oil to repel spiders?

    Hallo,

I wonder if anyone can comment on whether citronella oil is an effective deterrent for spiders? For example, sprayed around windows to stop them creeping in?

        Same here.
I don't mind a few spiders around the house, although the OH prefers it if I put the really big ones back outside.

It's conkers that repel spiders..... you can get a spray from those home catalogue places (like betterware).

I like spiders, case of having to really = I live in an old cottage and can't get rid of them anyway. They do at least get rid of or keep down the real nasties.

I don't so much mind the 'daddy long legs', it's big hairy ones the size of two-pound coins or larger that bother me *shudder*

Oh come on ddiogyn, are you a man or a mouse? By "the size of a 2 pound coin" are you including the legs, or just the body??

I like spiders, they're quite welcome in my house although the cats do occaisionally chase and eat them.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

If you don't like them then it doesn't matter how useful they are in the house - they are still not welcome guests!
I have been known to hoover out the greenhouse to get rid of all the egg sacs, or I wouldn't be able to go in there at all lol. And that is after 2 lots of therapy

Several drops of citronella oil on an old tea bag placed on the edge of a raised bed kept the cats off!.

                          Is this true?

I have had both next door's kitchen fitter & my hairdresser collecting the conkers from my big horse chestnut in the past few days because 'they repel spiders when you put them on the windowsill', which I had never heard of before.

I'm not overly bothered about spiders (mind you there have been a couple of real dinner plate jobbies in here in the last few days of which I am not that keen), but did wonder if there was any truth in the conker/spider repellant thing.

The spiders probably poke their heads round the door, spot the conkers - mutter about a mad spider hating person living there - and leg it back out.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Word has gotten round hereabouts: all the homeless spiders are now taking up residence in my kitchen.

As I'm now getting a (well-deserved) reputation as a slattern I think there will be some repatriation going on today: to the shed.
Hopefully the spiders will then gang together and build gert big webs to catch the meeces
