  • A winter for the gardeners.

It's hard at this time o year.
We all are getting to that point where we need a bit more light in our lives, Where the winter feast o yule is over an we are all feeling the lack o light and the land is hard as steel.
At first light in this house we go out to fill the feeders for the wild birds and melt off the water from their water bowl, an then look worried at the fish in the pond to spot a glimpse o movement as we gently break a hole in the ice that so cruelly threatens to entomb them to an icy death .

There is a beauty about it though, an when the tops o the leeks poke through the deep snow in defiance , an the spring cabbage refuses to bow down afor the elements, then it makes my heart sing

Bet I'm not the only one here that is appreciating how this cold will help kill the soil bugs. I am also hoping my garlic will take full advantage to split an form cloves that will grow big an plump when the soil warms an the good weather returns

This is good ol fashioned English weather, a proper winter again that shrugs off the scare mongers who preach about global warming, this is the winter they said we would never have again!. Although it makes some things harder, like travel and getting about i find myself relishing in its horticultural comforts and beauty.

    A winter wonderland for gardeners.

Beautifully put Wren. And I know what you mean - we've not had a "proper" winter for years.

That's quite a poetic post Wren and I agree, beautifully put. It does feel natural to have this "proper" winter weather in January. It always seems to be unhealthy when it's not freezing at this time of year.

I remember having winters like this as a kid , and although I've been moaning about frozen and burst pipes, and the inconvenience of it all, it's not all bad. I can still get out and about, and I do enjoy the weather when it's like this.

Thats very eloquently said Wren, and thank you for reminding us that sometimes we fail to notice the beauty that surrounds us everyday.

Oh dear. Whilst agreeing with most of the sentiments expressed I must take issue with comments relating to 'global warming'. What a lot of people refer to as 'global warming' is in fact climate change. Please don't confuse weather with climate. Weather is what we experience every day climate is more about long term trends. The fact is that global temperatures have increased over the last few decades. One possible consequence of climate change for the UK is warmer, wetter summers and colder winters. Far from this being the winter that some said we would never have again this is a winter that climate change predicts.
It is the doom of man, that they forget.

This is particularly going to be true if the Gulf Stream changes course and we have the climate that goes with our latitiude, instead of the milder maritime climate we have all got used to.
