  • xmas spuds started growing!!

    Hi All,

I planted some potatoes last Autumn in the hope of some for christmas with no joy.

I had forgoten where I had planted a few of them and they are now growing!!

Will they be bad? should I pull them now or wait and see?

    Thanks, Mandy

They should be fine - it just depends on whether you have any plans for this bit of ground. It'll be just like when you miss a spud at harvest time and get volunteers growing the following spring. If you need the space, dig them up. If you want the spuds, leave them!

I had a bit of a failure with Chritmas spuds last year but managed to salvage three plants that didn't get frosted too badly, and transfer them to a large pot.
They are now growing away merrily!

Today I dug up the rogue potato plants in my compost heap...I got half a dozen marble sized spuds, delish

I have always kept a pile of reject soil/compost/anything green and organic in a spare corner of the garden. To it I add potato peelings. Come Christmas... Potatoes. Never fails!

                  Hi Terrier,

That sounds like a great idea, where are you located? Maybe I need to try it a bit earlier up here>

                  Thanks, Mandy

Hi MandyB, I think you get Christmas in Falkirk just about the same time as we do in North Wales.
