I've grown it, but it didn't do much for me - although in all fairness, the taste of a potato is affected by your soil as well as personal preference, so you might love it! Steaming the spuds will make them less likely to disintegrate into soup!

This is a variety bred primarily for the show bench, so with careful growing it will look great. But the general consensus amongst growers seems to be looks at the expense of flavour. Of course seed sellers will proclaim how wonderful it tastes, but I've steered well clear of it.

I've considered my comments overnight in case I was being overly critical. I wan't, it's even worse than I said

Hi, Many thanks to all that responded to my recent Winston query, I have had a re-think, & decided to give it a miss this year! Any suggestions for a nice tasty early, most welcome. Last year I grew Lady Crystl but have struggled to find any this year.

For first earlies I have previously grown and enjoyed Accord. Second earlies were Charlotte, Kestrel, Shetland Black & Stroma.

This year I'm trying a lot more varieties to see what tastes good

Maybe i wont be growing as many as i first planned. Wish this thread had come up before i bought my seed potatoes at a potato day!
Still gonna grow loads of Kestrel, so all is still good.

Winston is a very pretty potato if well grown but that is all it has going for it. Kestrel if well grown is gorgeous but is brilliant in the kitchen for all purposes.
