  • Will this idea work?

My idea id to make a mini greenhouse for my chilli plants if they germinate so i bought these to use as pots
    https://imgur.com/oJ5eCzE
I was going to try bottom feeding them using water in the lower tub and a string going into the second tub at maybe around the center?
Can i use chicken manure pellets as a growing medium and do they smell?
I ask this because i can get a tub of these from a local supermarket where as none of them seem to have any compost yet

Well, it will work but ideally chillies need warmth and light. Too much warmth and not enough light will result in tall spindly plants that will keel over. Once germinated a sunny windowsill will do just fine.
Chicken manure pellets do smell and can't be used as a substitute for a growing medium. They are in pellet form.

      Hi thanks for the info
What would be the best medium for me to get as i could do with re potting my overwintered one also?
I think i can get them enough light and heat esp during summer i can move them from the front to back to give them hours of light.
The growing conditions must be not to bad at the moment i assume as the overwintered one had new growth and flowers on it the other day
Thanks again for all the help

Chicken pellets would burn the roots of young plants, they even burn fully mature rhubarb leaves.

Have you got an agricultural /diy store nearby? They always have compost.

They'll also need ventilation in those boxes or they'll cook - and there'll be condensation.
If you're keeping them indoors do you need a lid?

Yes there is a garden center and quite a few diy stores local, even a hydroponics shop. Never thought to try the diy store's as i thought supermarkets have this kind of stuff all year round but have not seen any in the stores other than the chicken poop
last year my neighbours gave me a new pot and medium for my overwintered plant but and i never really new what it was, i presume now just a good quality compost.
I have some chilli focus on way will that still be ok to use with fresh medium or will it be too much

I was planning on ventilation for the top, I'm a total noob so don't shoot me haha
The lid was planned to be used for the new seeds i'm trying to germinate if they pop, would condensation and heat be bad for them

If you are keeping indoors you don’t need a lid.
Once germinated, pot them up singly in small pots with your new compost and place them somewhere warm with plenty of light. (You won’t need to feed small seedlings in fresh compost - keep the chilli focus for later) Leave then in front of a sunny window, preferably not near a radiator that switches on and off.

Here’s mine at the moment - some toms in there too.

                    Pointers
Seedling - Modules / Seed Tray / Pot - Heat and Light, then more Light once germinated -
1st True Leaf - 10cm Pot - Light and Heat
Final Pot - 10l or there abouts. - Light and Heat. - MFB seems to be Vine preferred Pot

Water when needed.... Squeeze soil between fingers. If it sticks - Don't water.
Water from below where possible, only when needed. Don't let them dry out.

Use Multi Purpose Compost - check bag to see if additional fertilizer added.
Use tomato feed after 1st Fruit form or there about if no fertilizer in MPC
Harvest chilli frequently to keep production going.

                    Refer to other posts above.

kk thanks i will try get a small tray like that them put them in the other ones later.
I have a good spot for them where they will get enough light and heat
The seeds i'm trying to germinate are from a chilli i grew and dried last year so will be interesting to see if they grow.
Assuming the seed do pop how long do i have to plant them before they die

However, I did find that condensation and mould were a problem with the chilli seeds I germinated in a borrowed heated propagator with plastic lids last year, even with the small vent holes left open. Lost most of the seedlings.
The batch in open seed tray on kitchen window ledge a few weeks later fared much better ;-)

The other question I can help with is dried chicken manure. Yes, it does smell, and I think it would be much too strong to use neat - it seems to be used more as a soil ‘tonic’, and from memory you only need about 1 cupful per square metre of soil. Any more tends to burn plants (a bit like brown patches on lawn where dogs have urinated). I have gererally used standard multipurpose compost, or compost out of growbags, most of the big DIY stores sell compost, and many will deliver for a small fee which can be handy if you don’t have a car- those 40kg bags are heavy and awkward to carry on buses and trains!
I'm growing indoors and trying to keep it simple as possible. I can store a bag of compost or two but 40 kg of chicken poop no way

You can use anything plastic, mushroom trays, small food trays.

We all save seeds here, they will grow as well as any you buy.

??? I’m not sure what you mean? If you get your compost today, sow in an old tray/food container, a little water and within 7/10 my guess is you will have some seedlings. Pot up into yoghurt pots when they have grown a set leaves. Job done.

I'm planning on using chilli focus and carbonated water + watering from below.
Should i get compost with additional fertilizer added or just vanilla
