  • Wilkinsons pack of mixed courgettes, variable germination.

    The pack contained
black beauty, de nice a fruit rond, golden zucchini, patty pan, lebanese, yellow scallop

Being a Scrooge I don't sow all the seeds but say 4 or five of each.

The golden zucchini came up OK.
But the rest don't seem to have appeared.
I resowed about 3 weeks ago ( again in green house ), put in plenty of each.

Again no show ( apart from one yellow scallop )

Anyone else had this problem with the packs ??

    Jimmy.

Quite the opposite! I didn't expect them all to germinate and they have and I hate to compost healthy plants, so have grown them all on so far. I expect I'll give some away. Have you seen how many courgettes BigMallly is growing? BTW, you're not scrooges, you're just thrifty and that's commendable Get sowing some more.

My Custard Marrow (squash)took 8 days longer to germinate than my Invincible (Pumpkin) & Marketmore (cucumber) in the heated propagator, set all at same time in same compost

I sowed (late!) some different ones a couple of weeks ago and they've all come up nice and strong: Patty Pan, Rond de Nice and Gold Rush. Two of those varieties were cheapo seeds from Lidl.

What I meant is that a lot didn't germinate but I still have about 15 courgette plants now ( if all germinated could be 30 and more)

I think another of my late sowing has decided to appear.
Probably the cold is the problem. I was in my Greenhouse on Saturday and I could see my breath when I breathed out.
The Golden Courgettes are doing well and should go out in a frame this weekend, as will the my cucumbers, mainly Marketmore.
I stopped growing greenhouse cumbers cause they always got mildew, and cost a fortune.
Marketmore are great as they are just the right size.

That's good to hear Jimmy - you never know, you might end up wondering what to do with them all!

I tried two different courgettes this year El Greco and Soleil from plants of distinction, I had 10 of each planted at various time intervals, but none germinated. I emailed the company about it and I got sent 3 new packets of courgettes for free (hurrah a company that cares about it's customers for a change) which I will try to direct sow out now. I haven't had a problem with courgettes in previous years, probably something to do with the awful weather

I wouldn't try to direct sow (snails and slugs will get them as soon as they germinate). Start them in smallish (3") one or two seeds to a pot and germinate them somewhere warm. They can then be planted out as soon as they're big enough.
