  • Why is my soil white?

    Hi guys

Filled my beds up a few days ago with some Wickes compost and bfb for nutrients. Watered it in and left it.

Went to look at it again last night and it looked white!

The browner stuff at the top is a homebase growbag which I emptied onto the bed a couple of weeks ago so I could sow some carrots.

Is this normal. What do think guys?

Obvious thing to say is that is a type of fungus. Good soil contains all sorts of bacteria most of them good.
Was it a peat free compost? They tend to have a lot of woody/heavy organic matter and can come with a lot of bacteria.
It really depends on the type of fungus. Some are not too much to worry about, some are and others will give you lovely mushrooms!!
I'm not a mycologist, maybe someone else can identify but I guess it'll be hard to tell from a photo.
Sorry I'm not much help here!
Clay soil is just the big yins way of letting you know nothing good comes easy.

I have got to say it is only on the very top crust and if I turn it a bit it is fine. Will check in the next 24 hours

Could it be that your watering has left some of the bfb or compost components on the surface? Anyhow, give it a stir up and use it!
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Wickes peat in at a guess had some earlier this year and got exactly the same results only this was indoors. Mine was a mould which did not seem to harm the seedlings. I put it down to poor sterilization but could be wrong.
