  • Where are all the Rhubarb Crowns?!?

I went into the garden centre hoping to buy some and there's NOTHING. Lots of Christmas tat, but no rhubarb. Do the 'Chain' garden centres not sell this anymore? Was trying to save on postage, but it's looking like I'll have to beg some or buy mail order!

Hi SL - my local Wyevale was selling rhubarb crowns in pots a couple of weeks ago - not sure if they are still in stock - Timperley early or something.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Can't you nip down to a lottie this weekend and see if someone will split a crown for you- say for a bottle of wine or something?

I'm investigating that option, Nicos. I know OH's Dad had some but not sure if he's dug it up or not.

Wyevale was the garden centre I went in, Jeanie. Hmmm, maybe I'll have another look if OH's Dad doesn't come up trumps!

Mine are only a couple of years old - well, I've only had one crop year off 'em. Otherwise I'd offer to split mine.

I had to order them as I couldn't find any in the four different garden centres I visited

Despite all the Xmas tat they still had some rhubarb crowns in my local Wilkos (Farnborough) the other day.

Hi SL - sorry to report I gave you bad info! Went to Wyevale near me and nary a rhubarb crown in sight. How near are you to me? I may be able to split mine.

I bought a potted rhubard from our local gardencentre (Groves) last year. It seemed to die back and I thought it was a gonner. However it has survived. It was quite expensive by comparison to the 'car boot' stuff/ Think it was called Champagne. Has anyone heard of it and is it worth persevering with?

Bren I think that is the variety I planted - if it is then it is really tender right up to high summer: 'inferior' ones (not meaning to sound snobby) go rather stringy by July /August but mine didn't.
Just been googling to check my facts and it could be that I have been taking a load of rhubarb!

Just to report that OH's Dad has got some after all (he hadn't got round to digging it up)! Hurrah! Crumble all round!

You really ought to try rhubarb and orange jelly next season I used this recipe off Flummery's blog.

Just popped into my local Focus d i y shop and they are selling rhubarb roots - red champagne - 3 for £5: the stand looked newly-filled so they have not been standing around for long.
