  • What is wrong with my cucumber?

I've had quite a few cucumbers so far this year and they've all been fine, but today I spotted one that wasn't looking so good. I don't know quite how to describe it, so hopefully the attached pic will help. It's got dry, pale brown patches on it and I've just discovered that they scratch off to leave normal skin below. It's a Femspot cucumber, grown in the greenhouse next to the door.

Anyone got any ideas what might have caused this?
    TIA

Those brown bits are callouses. They form to protect the fruit when the skin is damaged in some way.
Those particular ones I would say are almost certainly down to slug/snail damage. They will sometimes graze on the skin of cucumbers, and the shape of the damage is pretty distinctive.

I agree, I think it's slug damage too. The calluses seem to grow with the cucumbers too, if the damage is done when young. I recommend nematodes for slugs and snails - nemaslug is great

I've occasionally seen this on my courgettes, but the slugs in my garden are fairly rapacious! How I long for a hedgehog or two.....

Yes I’d say that’s slug/snail damage. Never seen so much on one fruit though! Have a look around your greenhouse door area for the culprit/s.
