  • What Should Be Be Starting Now?

OK.... Like they say - you always learn so...

What are you planting now? Either in the propagator, greenhouse, in pots or directly outside.

I just sowed some kale and some perpetual spinach in the greenhouse, no idea if this is right though

Think I might need to bring them indoors

Sounds okay to me. I was going to sow spinach tomorrow but thinking about it, not sure whether I should wait til they germinate and then put in greenhouse. You've sown the seed of doubt!!!

I've sown quite a bit: tomatoes, chillies, sweet peppers, radishes, calabrese, sprouts, leeks, aubergine, okra and paris market carrots.... all in an unheated greenhouse. This time last year I already had loads of seedlings so I feel a bit behind this year.

I've got autumn-sown peas, onions and garlic outside, along with spring greens.

I have a long list of stuff ready to sow tomorrow.

I'm another try it and see what happens kind of gardener.

I have already in the plot Garlic & Onions (from sets), in the greenhouse i have from seed - Sweetpeas, Spring Onions, Paris Silverskin onions & Broadbeans. I have just sown today & have brought into the house to germinate...tomato, chilli, leek, onion, cabbage, PSB, peas, broadbeans. Plan to sow soon...carrot, parsnip, lettuce, radish, Pak Choi, French Beans. Like you guys, i am unsure if this is too early or not but..nothing ventured!!

I would say it's way early for kale unless you are growing it as salad - I don't sow mine until the end of spring/beginning of summer! BTW, Charles Dowding recommends not sowing pak choi until late summer, as it bolts in warm weather - you have been warned

Right now I'm gearing up for the main spring sowing - I'm doing the moon thing, hence my sowing is spread across the month:

Already germinated: onions, spring onions, early leeks, early carrots (Paris Market), broad beans, celeriac

This weekend (new moon): late leeks, lettuce, spinach, ruby chard, basil, parsley, coriander

Next weekend (first quarter): tomatoes, peppers, chillies, okra, peas, broccoli, cauliflower; second sowing of broad beans

Two weeks' time (full moon): maincrop carrots, parsnips, beetroot, early potatoes, late garlic, perennial herbs

I won't be sowing the fast-growing tender crops like runner and French beans, courgettes, squash, cucumbers, etc until April, otherwise I'll have no room indoors!

What Should Be Be Starting Now?

An elderly lady in the next road told me yesterday that she show toms and such like in sealed pots in the airing cupboard, then plants them into small pots when they are around 1" high. From there they go into the greenhouse. From there they grow on. From there they go onto big pots, grow bags, hanging baskets, etc. Don't know if that's any help to you peeps out there. I am going to try a couple of pots or so each with a few seeds in.
