    While going round a supermarket the other day, I noted that the cabbages were presented without any loose outer leaves, leeks trimmed to less than an inch of green showing and of course when preparing potatoes they are usually peeled, I cook the outer leaves of cabbage the green tops of leeks get added to soups and I generally peel older potatoes butt really all they need is washed as any dirt will come out when boiled. What part of veg. do you discard that could be used, and how could it be used
    it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

    Outer leaves and leek tops go in the compost, potatoe peelings in the bin. We don't peel carrots as after a good wash they are fine

      Sometimes use cabbage outer leaves usually the chickens have them. Use as much of the green part of leeks as possible. Never peel carrots. Regularly don't peel spuds ( sometimes it has to be done ). Sometimes eat spout top but usually chickens get them. Same goes for beetroot leaves. I eat broccoli stalk as well as the florets.

        We have three omnivorous dogs. Just about the only thing that goes in the compost bin or rubbish is bits from the allium family and the tops of aubergines. Oh, and mushrooms. They'll eat carrot and potato peelings, the ends chopped off courgettes, the skins off peeled tomatoes, brassica stumps (but not leaves with mealy aphids in, I've discovered), the central ribs off cauliflower leaves. One of them likes the tops and tails off green beans. They won't eat raw aubergines, just cooked ones.

        Ordinarily, a lot of this stuff would go to our chickens, but the dominant chicken doesn't like it and the others follow suit.

        I hasten to add that they are not starving dogs by any means.

          I'm a fussy eater and my philosophy is that if I am going to make the effort to grow veg than I may as well enjoy eating it rather than force myself to eat every scrap. I therefore peel potatoes and carrots (except when very young and small), I discard outer leaves of lettuces and cabbages and tougher stalks of things like broccoli. I discard the midribs of mizuna and kale, beans that have got past the young and tender stage and anything that the knife won't easily slice on a leek. I also skin my tomatoes.

          I find that if I don't do the above I just spend most of the meal spitting bits out, which really isn't very pleasant. Even if I make things into soups and puree them, if it is tough and stringy the soup is full of stringy bits, as I have learned in the past with things like leeks and runner beans.

          Everything discarded goes in the hotbin.

            I don't have room to grow a lot of veg, but most definitely the slightest sign of stringiness in runner beans and it's straight into the compost bin with them. There are always those that get missed in among the leaves and get too old.

              Home grown veg just gets a wash so no peelings, top and tailing goes into my veg stock bag in the freezer to save until I've got enough to make use of.

                I like the idea of keeping your top and tailings Bren, do you use them to make stock? and GL I am a bit surprised that you bin potato feelings, in fact surprised you peel them when you just wash carrotsdc
                it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

                  Only peel for mash and roast rary, my pops always threw out the potato peelings and I have just followed

                    Rary I add bay leaves, black pepper, what ever herbs I've got then cover with water then cook in pressure cooker for 30 mins it makes a nice stock for soup.
