  • What to chit potatoes in?

I usually use egg trays but can't get hold of any this year, what else can I use? I have large white plastic trays which are about an inch deep, can I use these if I line the bottom with something? I'll be putting them on the windowsill in a cool spare room. Thank you.

That should be fine Sam, mine are in the same, possibly deeper, trays. Scrunched up newspaper underneath them. We have set up the workmate in our porch to put trays on. Spud Central

They look fine although your. Want to be careful they don't roll and damage the chits when you transport for planting. That's why I like egg trays, got them from a local egg farm years ago and bring them out every year, shame you've not got yours anymore, what happened? Over zealous tidying?

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

When I didn't have egg boxes I would put them in seed trays. I'd wedge them in tightly, rose end up, touching each other so that they can't roll around. If they didn't quite fill the tray, I'd scrunch up newspaper to fill the remaining gaps. This worked fine for me.

The way you've done it there's a risk that they will roll over and damage the shoots when you carry the box to the veg plot.

I'll try and get some egg boxes over the next couple of weeks and individually move them, failing that I will carry each potato carefully into my garden! Thanks everyone.

I just stuff mine in the cut off bases of cardboard boxes about 2 foot square I leave them about 3 inch high, works fine,
i jam them not to tightly against each other, ontop of the bag they came in so i know were each type is and put different looking varieties next to each other, I never had a problem with knocking chits off

( strange colour picture due to the metal halide growlights )

I find it strange your having difficulty getting egg boxes. Most people I know eat eggs and they all come in 1/2 dozen egg boxes.

The big trays are much better than the boxes though as you can get loads on each one but if you shop at supermarkets then you'll probably struggle. I asked years ago at the farm near us and they gave me about a dozen trays.
