  • Weeding clay soil- help...

There's triffids in the garden and it hasn't rained in a while so the top is rock hard.
I'm tempted to use the tap water and water in some of the areas I want to weed but thought I should check on here if there are any other tips and tricks?

To get an idea of what sort of clay soil I'm talking about here, this town is famous for brick and tile manufacturing.

It's taken me about 45 minutes to stake 3 wigwams in the ground

I asked OH to go and get a concrete breaker as he wandered around imperiously muttering about the dandelions..

      But that's for another day..

Salt on the Dandelions BK, and Plantain, and many other weeds too. Just a sprinkle on a hot day, and they'll already be shrivelling by tea time

Get the hoe out. In weather like this they'll not feel like coming back up if you keep knocking the tops off.

For deep rooted weeds in heavy clay soil try a mattock - invaluable tool.

I had the same when I moved in, made any weeding impossible. There is no magic solution I'm afraid, just lots of soil improvement. If you make permanent beds, it means your soil improver will go further, as you're not improving the paths you only walk on.

Please ignore everything I say, I make it up as I go along, not only do I generally not believe what I write, I never remember it either.

Hoe hoe hoe....and pull the rooted ones out after a rainstorm.

And make permanent beds and mulch mulch mulch.
