No expert and someone may say otherwise, but I have some onions in root trainers in GH as ground isn't ready for them yet. I stick my finger down into them and see if they feel dry, if so give them a water, but put in into the tray they are resting in, so it goes to the roots.

Put an inch of water in the tray, and tip away any that hasn't soaked up after 15-30 mins.

Only do this when the modules/pot/whatever feels light. If you keep them too wet they will rot.

I wouldn't stick my finger in personally, just feel the weight of the tray. Try it when it is just watered and you'll see the difference between wet and dry.

I am watering mine in an unheated greenhouse once a week at the moment.

Just stuck mine in an open cold frame today to harden off. Gave them a good dousing before moving them!

Transplant them when they look big enough to survive (mine are like grass ) and when your soil is warming up and drying out a bit.
