  • Watch out for e-mails from Chiltern Seeds

Just a heads up. The following info can be found on the Chiltern seeds website.

Yesterday we experienced a sophisticated cyber attack on our website. This caused the website to crash and some customers have received unsolicited emails purporting to be from Chiltern Seeds. The attack has been reported to the police and our team have been working through the night.
If you have received an email purporting to be from us telling you that you have won a hamper, please IGNORE THIS AND DELETE THE EMAIL IMMEDIATELY. This is a spam email and it is NOT from us, we would NEVER send emails asking you to click on any link other than to our own website.
Please be reassured that payments on our website are 100% secure and that we do NOT hold any payment information on our website or server. If you are in any doubt, please give us a call on 01491 824675.
We really appreciate your support at this difficult time and hope that you will continue to enjoy the best service and the best seeds, as you have done for the past 40 years.
All the Team at Chiltern Seeds.

I was recently asked to advise a small company on an IT upgrade, some of their machines were still XP they had virtually no security and had a sales website. Because they were a small company they could not imagine that anybody would be interested in hacking into their system. They didn't think that an old bloke in his 70s could know much about these things so they did very little. I really hope that nothing goes wrong. My daughter manages two websites and their is a third dormant site. She checks the dormant site weekly and on one check found that all the links were connected to porn sites.

I have a small raspberry PI that monitors my greenhouse temperatures.
I had a hole in my router so I could access things externally when I am on holiday.
Recently I notice some strange activity on the PI.
When I investigated there were logins from China addresses that were trying to download and run various programs.
I closed the hole and reformatted the PIs Operating system.
So beware these people are out to hack us.

Whilst we should all be vigilant can we please keep the scary stories to a minimum. I am sure there are quite a few of us that are not technology minded and I don't wish for people to worry themselves silly. However, I am sure if anyone does have concerns they can ask on the vine and peeps would help.

Interesting that when I clicked on Chiltern yesterday, that they now have a system in place to check all connections going in to their site.

Note: My garden fork seems immune to being hacked, nicked possibly but not hacked.
