  • Very Windy!

I am in Devon in the South West. The weather here today is appalling and seems to be deteriorating as I type. The temp' reading at the moment is only 13c. The gusting wind is playing havoc with my vegetables. I have just had to go and try and give my peas extra support. Not an easy task in high winds and pouring rain. I also noticed whilst out there that my potato plant tops have been laid flat by the wind and nets covering the Cauliflower and Cabbage plants has been blown off.

I just looked at the day time temperature for this day last year and it was 23c!

    Happy Days!

    Greg

Just checked the wind speeds here. Shows wind speed at 30 mph gusting to 62 mph!!!

Yes, an unusually deep area of low pressure for the time of year is moving in during today and tomorrow with strong winds and heavy rain. While this would be nothing out of the ordinary in winter, it does tend to play havoc with plants that are in full leaf and those that need support. Its going to be windy for the next day or 2 so reinforce your supports as best you can!

It hasn't stopped raining all day in Cardiff. Not too windy but very, very wet! Even the dogs don't want to go out! I certainly don't

Of course its "sunny" here, NS! Don't know why you ask - do you doubt me?

13 degrees is a heat wave and gusts of 30 m.p.h. are just a blow up here.
Still hoping to pick first tomato's middle of this month.

They reckon that the jetstream has moved south, trapping us in c***p weather for another summer, its now 11yrs since we had a real summer here and I am getting really pi***d off with the clowns on the box wittering on about heatwaves for 15 minutes before the usual"except Scotland" punch line, just once we would like to be something other than a postscript as we don't all live in London, thankfully..

Yes, the jet stream has moved south for the moment, but it is far from possible to say with any certainty what the rest of the summer will bring. The west coast of Scotland is always likely to see the wettest and windiest weather because of its position exposed to the Atlantic and further north than the bulk of the UK. This means that the jet stream has to move a long way north in order for Scotland to enjoy a warm and dry summer. It can happen, but its less likely to do so than further south.

When I was a kid I used to spend summer holidays (usually in August) in the gorgeous area around the Mull of Kintyre. I remember well the forecasts telling us how nice and sunny it would be elsewhere, while we had low cloud, drizzle or rain. Very frustrating.

I spent Sunday morning putting up wind break protection on the lotty, glad I did now. Just hope it's enough to prevent everything taking too much of a battering.
