small squash like golden nugget or sweet dumpling will trail over the edges.

I grew a mix of mange tout and nasturtiums in one a few years ago, very pretty it was too. Not sure that there would be sufficient soil for a squash as they're a pretty hungry plant but suppose you could try it.

Nasturtiums (if you didn't know already!) are edible too - look fab in salads and wonderful if you make a terrine and set the flowers into gelatine on top. xx

That was the idea of putting the nasturiums in too, too lazy to do the terrine thing but love them in salads. Look soooooo pretty.

Ooh - just thought. Do you have a greenhouse? That triple hanging basket would be fab planted out with different types of chillis - variagata, trifetti and Thai Hot would all be good.

Yes sorry Alison - I realised after I wrote the above that you would know they were edible. Also they look great scattered over vanilla ice cream - and I imagine would look pretty against the white of a wedding cake?

Dwarf runner beans,dwarf peas. If you've got a sheltered warm area then aubergines and chilli. i got more chilli and aubergine out if the ones in baskets that in pots. Also any salad leafs in between whatever you plant and rocket will trail over

most herbs will do well in a hanging basket - I've got thyme, sage, rosemary and something else in one and they are going great guns. I am wondering about salad veg - most of its not that different to herbs so you could give it a try. Spinach and perpetual spinach might go well.

thanks peeps...... lol, got a lot to choose from!! All my herbs are grown in an area of the garden already so don't need to grow more. Aubergine's? i didn't think they'd trail.... or chilli's actually. I'm still pretty new to growing my own and just assumed everything grew upwards!!! lol

I'm going to try small chillies (Bolivian Rainbow, which supposedly only grows to 30cm) with "Gartenperle" toms and basil - should be very colourful!

I've put a lot of fertiliser in the soil on my jardinieres with the squash in. Also have slow release granules, water gel and pipes to water the roots.

As long as you keep on top of them they will thrive but you will have to net and support the heavy fruits to stop them snapping the vine.

any other idea's?....... how would cayenne chilli's do? this will be my first attempt at chilli's, just love the thought of hanging basket bursting with stuff i can pick and eat.

I am growing 3 types of strawberry , ordinary ones I have in the garden , Temptation and little alpine , tomatos , hestia runner beans , and dwarf french beans in hanging baskets this year . I am planting the same for my son who only has a balcony into the 1/2 circle wall planters which will go on the wall each side of the balcony . He didn't want pots on the ground in case his son used them to climb over the wall and fall .I will be watching this thread to get ideas of anything else we can grow .I fancy the dwarf peas , but havent seen seeds for them anywhere .
