  • Transplanting of Leeks and Onions

I sowed my Leeks and Onions on Boxing Day but have only just got round to transplanting them into bigger pots. Some look alright, some a little pale and some look dead now the ones that are still alive I will transplant. The question is will this cause them to bolt when they are planted out?

There's the million dollar question, it shouldn't, but you never know with Onions, especially red ones.

I've read is some sites that if you cut back the sail, this will reduce the chances of bolting. It said that the plant will put more energy into the bulb. Don't know how true that is. I'm on to my 2nd sowing of onion seeds, so I'm no expert.

It also mentioned that cutting off the seed case stopped onions uprooting (which I've seen). Danger is that unless you cut at the look, you might cut off the root.
