    Is it too late for onions ??

    Hi,

    Been too busy fixing my new allotment that was full of weeds... many things planted there.

    Have I missed the opportunity to plant onions??
    Is it too late ?

    I can do from seeds or sets, whichever (if) helps

    Any advice please

    Well reluctantly I would say yes it is late, spring onions maybe. Having said that I now expect a lot of people to say the opposite. If you can still buy sets maybe you could get some small onions by the autumn. There are a lot of other things you could grow now though.

      Yes, it is too late . . . unless you want spring onions ? You can sow seed in August (18th) for the overwintering varieties. Sets go in later. . .

        Many thanks for help. Will skip onions for now and do in Aug

        I believe there are varities specific to Once that can be sown in August ?

        Also which is recomended for good yeild and pest resistance, seeds or sets ??

          Yes, search for Overwintering onions or Japanese onions.

          I don't think there is much difference in terms of yield, you can get disease carried by the set but unlikely with seed. Pest resistance is dependant on variety and from what I have seen you get a better choice by buying sets for overwintering . . . I plan to buy seed though as I like more of a challenge

            I have no joy whatsoever growing onions from seed - but sets are easypeasy.
            I bought 2 bags of onions sets reduced to 25p a fortnight ago, stuck them in the ground and they're about 6" high now. I don't expect full size onions from them but if they make a fat spring onion size I'll be happy. If you can find any sets around, give it a go
