    Too Late for Garlic?

    Wow I'm on a roll today with the questions...

    I have not garlic growing thanks to my chickens pulling up my october sowings last year and have just discovered there are garlics you can plant in March. Am I too late to plant them now instead?

    Don't know Shortie. All I know is in March I split up a bulb from the supermarket and planted the cloves. The greenery is there 6" high and looks as if it is thriving. What I will get out of the ground remains to be seen but will certainly post and let you know. Wish me luck.

      Hi Shortie, Yes you are bit on the late side allright. Having said that, nothing ventured, nothing gained. If you plant now, you will get some sort of a return the only thing being, the garlic will be a bit on the small sode. However it will be usable and thats all you want. Garlic needs a long growing season to be at its best. Usually planted in the autumn and left outdoors overwinter and harvested end of June. Good Luck. Leave it in the ground as long as possible.

        As Bramble says, nothing ventured, nothing gained. The two local GC's up here are still actively promoting garlic for sale so give it a go. OUr growing season is shorter up here so we are later sowing and planting most things anyway - Mother Nature learned to play catch up long long ago

          We've planted late garlic before and basically we got one bulb from each clove. The bulbs didn't form cloves (well ok one big one!) but they were edible. I'm not sure I'd spend money and buy 'em now, but if you see some cheap?

            Our local garden centre sells already going garlics in a pot about 7 for 75p so thats how I'm getting round my late start. I planted some cloves fromt esco this time last year and had little tiny garlics by august but they rotted before they got big enough to use
