  • Tomatoes - HELP!!

I have Maskotka (cherry) and Alicante (normal) tomato plants, some in growbags, some in large pots. They're all doing well, but last month, rushing to move them out of the cold I mixed them up and lost the labels. The Maskotkas don't need pinching out, the Alicantes do. How do I tell the difference as pinching out, or not, is becoming necessary?

    Thanks.

They look completely different. The Maskotkas will be short and stocky and very bushy and the alicantes will be growing up a central stem.

Thanks, but I know I have both types as I grew them from seed and, believe me, there is nothing at present to distinguish them. Perhaps some have slightly lighter green foliage than others, (but which?) but both types are now producing side-shoots.

What would happen if I left the side shoots, or some of them, on all plants and simply stopped all the growing points when I have enough tomatoes forming, tying everything up as I go. It's only me I'm catering for and have eight plants, so quantity of fruit per plant is not the main aim and the labour/time in doing extra tying up is not a problem.

In that case, I'd just leave them for now until you work out if there is any difference....

when they start flowering you should be able to tell then, there'll be loads more flowers per truss on the cherry ones.
