  • square foot gardening

I have just come across an article about growing veg in one foot squares.
The plot is marked off into one foot squares and a different crop sown in each square. One large plant to a square and several small plants to a square.
Plants are not grow in the same square but crop rotation used. It is said that this is a good way for small gardens. Has anybody tried is method and if so how good was it ?

I use a version, no name - but I mark out my squares with onions and plant in batches. One courgettes per square, or about 4 lettuces, or about 4 strawbs.

Having said that - I just found 4 x 6 foot 1 inch battens in the garage, so I'm going to make those into square bed surrounds later today - and will use those to mark out my beds in future - although I still like the onions as they get putted during the year once the crop is established.

I used it last year to great effect. I had two beds approx 8 x 2, used lengths of 1cm thick wood to make a grid of approx 1ft each and planted up accordingly. I found it very effective, had to do very little weeding and had great crops. as above I planted 4 lettuce per square, 1 courgetter per square, at the edge so it could tumble over though it took more room in the end...4 pea plants per square, 12 beetroot, i tomato, 3 beans etc...I found it a great use of space.

            Thanks every one,
I have now read Jaxoms post and found it very interesting.I made two 4ft x 8ft raised beds last week and planted stuff in lines right across so am stuck just now but next year will give this method a try as it sounds a really good system for this fairly small area to grow veg in.

I discovered this method of Mel Bartholomew's square foot gardening earlier on this year and although I was a little late getting of the ground with it I am very pleased with the results so far. I will stick to this method now as it makes it so much easier when digging has become a near impossibility
