    Spring cabbage

    I have grown spring cabbage for a lot of years, seed has always been Flower of Spring, we eat every other plant as spring greens, letting the others heart up for early cabbage.

    BUT, last year and again this year they are just going to seed before they are getting to a half decent size even for spring greens.

    Any thoughts ladies and gents.

    As you have been growing them for many years Alan with no problems, it's hard to say what may be causing them to bolt. I was going to suggest maybe not planted firmly enough.

      Now then bigmally, you may have just hit the nail on the head there. I have two allotments, one at the top of the hill and one at the bottom, which is two overcoats warmer and more sheltered, I have always grown the Spring cabbage at the top one, but thinking about it, we have had some very strong winds over the last couple of years and I have had to keep earthing and healing them in. Mmmm perhaps I should try some at the bottom allotment as well as the top one and see the difference.

      Also, I was wondering, the top allotment has become very fertile with manuring and limeing, maybe this does not suit them.

        Yeah I'd have to agree with BigMally. Brassicas need really firm soil or that have a tendency to bolt - In the past I've found sprouts to be he worst for bolting.
