  • Sorting out my seed box(es)

With money being a bit tighter this coming year I was very restrained when OH offered to take me to the garden centres to look for bargains. Although there were a lot of half price seeds I resisted, and came home to work out what I ACTUALLY needed before giving in to temptation.

So far I have only managed to catalogue my tomatoes, beans and cucurbits, and I've been at it since 2pm.

Tomatoes - thanks to the seed circle I have 55 varieties, most of which I have now identified as cordon, bush, beefsteak, ox heart, cherry, currant, and salad, with colours noted as well.

Cucurbits - I had an appalling year for these like most people, but checking up on seeds I had left from last year I have 19 varieties (mainly winter squash, only 3 types of cucumber and 3 types of courgette). We buy so much squash it would be great to have a good year and get something bigger than a tennis ball.

Beans - 20 types of these, runners, dwarf french, climbing french and broadies. I also joined the pea and bean circle, so this number will go up. This does not include the unidentified beans I've been finding all over the place. I have 3 types of runners that look distinctly different, but I'm not sure what they were now (probably not isolated either). One is white so moonlight or desiree. I just can't bring myself to bin them, it seems so cruel, but I can't see me finding space for them either. I'll have to make a bean casserole with the extras. They are self saved, so not treated with anything.

I haven't even got to the chillies, peas and everything else yet. Once I have gone through them all I'm planning on checking out the VSP to fill any gaps (I've already seen some I fancy, but maybe I don't really NEED them).
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

I sorted my seed box out and really cannot believe how many packets I have and then all the little packets from the tom seed swap! and there's the all in swap still to come

Think I'd need another plot to grow them all, but I'll give it a good go on the one I've got

I've done mine today, started just before lunch and have just finished (although have to packet up some broad bean seeds which are still on a saucer on top of the dresser where they were left to dry at the end of the season). Currently looks like I'm in need of parsnip, main crop carrots, beetroot, various herbs and assorted flowers so not too bad at all. Have loads of peas, beans, tomatoes etc so not going near those sections in the catalogues.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I've yet to go through my tin to see what I have and haven't ordered any yet, definately not like me. I don't have nearly as many as most people but enough that I shouldn't really need buy too much until i've run the ones I have down

I've been checking out the VSP too and plan on using that before I place an order with realseeds. I binned all the seed catalogues that came through....... in my defence, they really shouldn't send them on spec when so many ppl use the internet now, seems like such a waste.

I definitely need carrots, as I stupidly left the seed packets in the shed, which has a leaking roof right now plus the meeces have been in Apart from that, I've treated myself to a couple of new bean varieties and replaced a couple of chilli varieties that have run out, and that's it, I don't need anything else

I checked mine the other week and I need parsnip and leeks seeds, I don't have a huge stash of seeds because I grow in the back garden but looking at what I have there's enough to fill an allotment.

Started going through mine yesterday. So many seeds for so little space!!

Ordered more grip seal bags off eBay to bag up some chilli for the VSP as I don't think I need all of the 6x100 seeds I bought last summer.

Also with the tom seed swap I'm now up to about 70 types of toms.

Started on mine after being given a lovely seed store tin , Burgon and Ball, for christmas. Now have a little list of 'would likes'.

Not started sorting yet but did give the packets in the tin a little stroke when I put the magazine freebies in there yesterday. Just to let them know they're not forgotten.
