Shallot Set Planting - Best Method

I've started mine in cells in the greenhouse. Stops the birds lifting them and gives some protection while they start growing.

My Golden Gourmet went into modules at the weekend, they're on the greenhouse bench for now

When do you reckon you will plant out? Is it when they are a certain size?

Shallots are tough little plants. I planted some Golden Gourmet direct outside last year shortly before the snow. Initially I was convinced they would all be dead. They all grew anyway, did really well in fact. So now I do not bother coddling them, they go straight in the ground and fend for themselves.

They don't have to be planted deep in the cells, I have them probably 1/2 buried or less just so that the roots can form out of the basal plate. I will be planting mine out late March/early April depending on how wet/cold it is.

Probably at the end of Feb/beginning of March, unless we get another sudden freeze. It just means that they have a few roots to start with.

I plant mine in trays of potting compost too. About 5cm apart and the top 2/3 above the soil.

I start hardening off when the roots start looking a bit tangled but easy enough to shake loose.
I go by the root growth not by the top growth as my aim us to make it difficult for the birds to tank them out.

I just planted mine today, direct outside as I didn’t have time previous to now to do them in cells!!

I also planted my onion sets, Red Baron and Stuttgarter.
