    Self Watering Plant Pots on sale at Lidl

    Hi everyone, just thought it would be helpful for those looking to buy plants pots for the new growing season. These are great as they have a water reservoir at the bottom to save on water and time. They are relatively cheap at £3.99-£4.99. I bought some last year to grow veg and everything did very well. They were sold out just days after I decided to get some more so I went first thing this morning to buy some for this growing season. Here's what they look like:

    You could probably make something similar yourself, have an outer pot, then an inner pot a cpl of inches higher, have strips of capillary matting through the top pot connecting it to the bottom pot. Then plant in the top pot, fill the bottom pot with water and the matting will wick the water as needed.

      I made these from florists buckets.

      A small bucket with larger set inside so that there is a reservoir, between the two is a 3" pot set into the bast of the larger (top) pot. Reservoir filled with water via a pipe; the compost in the top pot and 3" 'wick' pot soak it up as needed.

      Total cost: about £4 for 12.

        Hi Jonohanson, do you have to replace the capillary mats every year? I've made quite a few self watering planters from heavy duty plastic crates but find that clean-up is more tedious at the end of the season (washing the different components, some of which are no longer as durable because they are not meant to be used for this type of set-up). I can make them for about £1.50 each, but I guess I prefer the convenience of the pre-made planters in addition to the overall aesthetics.

        Sowitgrowit, I'm not sure if your plans include drilling a hole on the side (up to the water level of the reservoir) but this helps prevent the growing medium from being over watered/clogged up.
